Experience a Real Nova Scotia Maple Farm
Telecom problem-solver turned maple farmer
Robert Saturno spent much of his career in telecommunications and technology, helping businesses solve problems, before he traded that world for the sugar woods of Saturno Maple Farm in Avondale, Nova Scotia, just outside Windsor. It is, as he puts it, a world away from tapping maple trees and making syrup, and yet the specialty foods life he and his wife built on this small family farm leans hard on what the corporate years gave him: patience, and the ability to explain complicated things in a way that people can easily understand. That second skill turned out to be the whole backbone of a guided farm tour. He has always enjoyed figuring out how things work, building things, finding better ways to do something, and running a maple farm, he'll tell you, involves a lot more problem-solving, technology, and creativity than most people might think. Moving to rural Nova Scotia was the chance to build something different together as a family, and he and his wife have learned a tremendous amount along the way, from making maple syrup to creating homemade treats to running their little farm shop.
The standard he holds is simple and it costs him volume. The shop carries pure maple syrup, handmade maple lollipops, ginger sweets, jams and preserves, and behind each of those is a willingness to take a little extra time to get something right rather than rush it just to make more. With the syrup, the aim is preserving that wonderful, natural maple flavour. With the sweets, it is the balance of flavour, sweetness, and texture. They enjoy experimenting with new recipes and flavours, but not everything makes it onto the shelves; if they are not happy with how something turns out, they would rather try again. "If we wouldn't be happy serving something to our own family, we wouldn't feel right selling it to someone else's." Being small is what makes that possible. They are not trying to compete with large factories.
Tours run by advance booking, and the people who walk through have come from across Canada and around the world. What gets him is the children. Many visitors have enjoyed maple syrup their whole lives and have never seen a maple tree tapped, never understood just how much sap it takes to fill one bottle, and watching that land on a young face is the part he looks forward to. His favourite stretch comes at the end, sharing maple treats while everyone asks questions or tells stories about where they've come from. Some days it feels less like running a business and more like showing friends around the property. A kind review after a long, busy day still means a great deal.
Underneath it is a belief that life is about more than working and making money: learning new things, spending time with family, meeting good people, and hopefully leaving something meaningful behind. He thinks about their young son growing up here, and hopes that one day the boy will look back and remember the time they spent together, the things they built, the challenges they overcame, and all the wonderful people who came to visit. Knowledge, to Robert, is meant to be shared. If someone leaves having learned something new, or feeling a little more connected to nature, that counts as accomplished. He is not trying to build the biggest maple farm. He wants something genuine, welcoming, and meaningful, and the reminder he carries from all of it is that you're never too old to learn something new.
Tapped trees and open gates
A taste of our woods
Saturno Maple Farm's Pure Nova Scotia Maple Syrup began with a question rather than a business plan. When Robert Saturno and his family moved to Avondale in 2023, they found themselves surrounded by beautiful maple trees, and curiosity about making their own syrup gradually grew into something much bigger. Learning how to tap the trees, collect the sap, and turn it into syrup has been quite an adventure for the family, season by season, in their own sugar woods.
The syrup is the thing they are especially proud of: rich, natural maple flavour, made with care right here on their little family farm. There is no fancy story behind the name. Every bottle represents the trees on the farm, the changing seasons, and the work that goes into making something from nature, and that is exactly why people reach for it again.
The same spirit runs through the rest of the farm shop. Handmade maple lollipops, ginger sweets, and other small-batch treats come from a family that enjoys experimenting with different flavours and making things you don't always find in a regular store.
Much of it is tasted before it is bought. Visitors walk through the maple woods on a guided tour, learn how sap becomes syrup, and sample the result. When they take home a bottle or a few sweet treats, they're taking home a little piece of their Nova Scotia experience.

A Heartfelt Note
First of all, thank you for taking the time to learn a little about our family and our farm. When we moved to the small community of Avondale, Nova Scotia, back in 2023, we never imagined that our little homestead would grow into something we'd be sharing with people from all over the world. It started small, and in a lot of ways it still is small. That part we like.
Saturno Maple Farm is very much a family adventure. My wife Hasini and I have put a lot of love, hard work, and long hours into building it, and we're still learning something new every day. There's always another question about the sugar woods, about the sap, about how a season behaves differently than the one before it. William is part of this too. It belongs to all of us.
Whether you've joined us for a guided maple farm tour, picked up a bottle of our maple syrup, enjoyed one of our handmade treats, or simply shared a kind word about our farm, please know how much we appreciate it. Every visit, every purchase, and every recommendation helps support our little family farm and allows us to continue doing something we truly enjoy.
But more than anything, we hope that when you visit, you feel welcome. We love meeting new people, sharing stories, answering questions, and showing others a little piece of rural Nova Scotia. If you're ever in our neck of the woods, we'd love to welcome you to the farm.
Thank you for supporting small, local, family-run businesses like ours. It really does mean more than you know.
